The renovation of the five derelict areas involved in this project is functional to the renovation of the old town as future location for the most important activities, especially for the still missing services which will be linked to the already existing ones, particularly the cultural and educational activities. Just as in the past the School of Art supported the woodworking and home furniture, so now these activities and services can attract and support new eco-friendly and technologically advanced activities. The areas involved in the project are in a strategic position inside the old town and easily accessible, along the railway station and near the south and the north entrances of the town. They are connected also visually to the municipal Villa Padulli, which is on a dominant position over them and over the old town, like a symbol of the role it can play, once renovated, as a location for promotion, research, and representation activities. The Villa shall be the link between the local research, the University, and the metropolitan research, that could have here a decentralized prestigious seat. Cabiate is a town in the province of Como, about 20 kilometres north of Milan and just as many south-east of Como. The first historical reference to the town origin dates to year 745. The town has developed around its castle, and today it is home to numerous big furniture companies. It is located in the regional Groane Park, in the woodwork and furniture district, at about 30 minutes by train from Milano. The old town of Cabiate is typologically and morphologically structured according to the old connection home-workshop, and therefore suitable and very attractive for new activities in a mixed residential and services context.
